Tips to take care of your hearing

Just as there are many small ways to maintain your overall health, there are also things you can do on a daily basis to protect your hearing health.

And it’s important to start these habits early because damage to our hearing is often permanent.

TIP 1 – Select the right earphones

Select the right earphones, meaning those that fit in the ears or that cover them entirely so the sound is contained. This means you can keep the volume lower because you won’t need to cover any background sounds.

Also limit how long you listen and the volume: to avoid affecting your hearing, estimate to listen at 60% of the maximum volume for 60 minutes. If you want to listen longer, it’s best to lower the volume.

TIP 2 – Use ear plugs that filter out sound

Use ear plugs that filter out sound when you’re going somewhere noisy like a rock concert: they will lower the decibels you’re hearing but you’ll still be able to enjoy the music.

TIP 3 – Use clamshell or silicone hearing protectors

Use clamshell or silicone hearing protectors when mowing the lawn or working with machinery (e.g. when working in construction).

TIP 4 – Avoid using cotton swabs (Q-Tips).

Rather than getting ear wax out, swabs push the ear wax deeper, which sometimes leads to impacted wax. Use a washcloth to clean your ears or see an ENT

TIP 5 – Musicians: use stage monitors or musician ear plugs

Musicians use stage monitors or musician ear plugs that allow you to control the sound environment and keep it within a safe range.
