Imagine you\u2019re\u00a0in a dark movie theatre and have just walked out into bright daylight.\u00a0Everything seems glaringly bright to you, but not to people who were\u00a0not in the theatre. Your eyes got used to the darkness and now must get\u00a0used to the light.<\/p>\n<p>Your ears adjust to sounds in the same\u00a0way your eyes adjust to light. The goal\u00a0is to avoid total silence so you can help your ears\u00a0readjust. Some examples of sounds to use are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Music at a comfortable volume<\/li>\n<li>Radio or television<\/li>\n<li>A running fan<\/li>\n<li>A tabletop water fountain<\/li>\n<li>A sound generator<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you\u2019re in a situation where the sound is too bothersome, it\u2019s better to\u00a0move gradually away from the source until the volume is tolerable than\u00a0to withdraw completely from the sound\u2019s source.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><b>Ear-level sound generator<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>In experimental research, people who wore ear-level\u00a0sound generators could tolerate more sounds after\u00a0two weeks.
