Tips for the person with a hearing problem<\/span><\/h3>\n

  • Stand close to (3\u20135 feet) and facing the person you are talking to.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Make sure people do not speak to you from another room or while standing behind you.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Eliminate background noise (television, windows, doors).<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Pay attention to lighting: keep light sources and windows behind you.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Get used to looking at the person\u2019s face and lips. Pay attention to gestures and body language.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Tell the people you\u2019re talking with that you have a hearing problem.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Ask what the subject under discussion is.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Ask people to repeat what they\u2019ve said slowly using different words.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Never pretend you understood if that isn\u2019t the case.<\/span><\/li>\n

    • Speak slowly and clearly without exaggerating or yelling.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Speak in short, simple sentences.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Make sure the person understood by asking questions and repeat if necessary.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • If the message is still not clear, rephrase using different words and add gestures. <\/span><\/li>\n
    • If necessary, write down key words.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Regularly mention the subject of the conversation.<\/span><\/li>\n
